Bikes are available to children and young people who have been diagnosed with any cancer up to and including the age of 18. This can include their siblings (18 and under), parents can also apply in certain circumstances*. In all cases it needs to be shown that provision of additional cycles will encourage the applicant to use their cycle more. Regrettably Cyclists Fighting Cancer must restrict our awards to UK residents.
*Please contact us via email if you are wishing to apply for parents bikes prior to filling in the application at awards@cyclistsfc.org.uk
Yes there is, the rule of thumb is to give bikes to siblings and parents where those bikes will result in the child living with cancer will be encouraged to use their bike more. If you are unsure regarding this and need more advice or would like to discuss your application please contact us. Typically this will mean the main bike and tow extra bikes for siblings or parents. Contact us to discuss.
All our regular bike awards are made through our preferred suppliers Frog Bikes and Trek UK. If you are applying for a specially adapted bike or trike you should contact us to discuss your needs in more detail. Please specify where possible which bike or bike type is preferred.
Please note that the intention of our charity is to primarily encourage exercise and activity for the child living with and beyond cancer, therefore we ask that the bikes are appropriate to their age and intended use. For example we fail to see where a BMX bike would be suitable unless for use in skate parks, organised racing or clubs, that said we are not anti BMX and have provided many over the years.
You can apply for additional equipment if it is the right solution for your situation. Tag-a-longs are ideal for young riders from the age of 4 – 8 years. Trailers, baby seats and balance bikes are a great solution for even younger family members 1-3 years. We would always recommend a bike or trike first wherever possible.
It is dependent upon stock at our suppliers but typically an award takes 6 to 8 weeks. Specially adapted trikes can take much longer as they individually specified and built to order.
Not a penny, Cyclists Fighting Cancer will cover the entire cost.
We can supply a wide range of trikes and tandems from specialist suppliers to support all kinds of requirements including specialist advice on use of prosthetics etc.
We recommend that contact us on 0300 500 4040 to discuss this in more detail even if you feel your child wouldn’t be able to ride a trike or bike, we have over 18 years experience to draw on.
We have a recommended retail price upper limit of £700* per application, however, we can approve bikes over this amount on application in special circumstances. For example, we received an application from a 17 year old who, before treatment was doing triathlons but had outgrown his race bike in the intervening time. Cyclists Fighting Cancer were able to supply him a race bike so he could compete again. If your application is going to exceed this amount please email us as below.
*Please consider that we are supplying over 600 bikes and trikes per year.
