Cyclists Fighting Cancer

Cyclists Fighting Cancer

We help children and young people living with cancer across the UK regain their physical fitness, improve mental wellness and reduce social isolation by giving them new lightweight bikes, specially adapted trikes, cycling related equipment and support.

Since 2005 we have helped over 9,500 families and we are passionate about sharing the benefits of exercise and activity for people living with and beyond cancer.

"I have been working with Cyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC) for the past 15 years in my role at Great Ormond Street and they really are the most wonderful charity. Their ethos of promoting physical activity and exercise is well researched, evidenced and completely on par with our passion for our brilliant children and young people moving through our Cancer Unit.

Cycling is an excellent form of physical activity with so many benefits; low impact, improves cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength, encourages coordination and promotes maintenance of healthy weight and mind. All of these positive effects make it such a brilliant, fun, sociable and accessible activity for so many of our patients, who have varying abilities and disabilities".

Types of bikes we provide

Types of bikes we provide

Balance bike

Balance bike

They are useful for younger riders to learn how to balance before they learn how to pedal and brake. They offer independence and a way of building leg muscle strength.

Standard bike

Standard bike

The standard two wheeled bikes are all super lightweight making them easier to pedal and manage.  They really help with loss of muscle, coordination difficulties and balance issues.

Specially adapted bike

Specially adapted bike

If there are additional needs, we can adapt a standard two wheeled bike accordingly.  An assessment will be carried out by our Bike Adaptation Specialist who will find a solution – we have never failed to get anyone pedalling yet!

Tag-a-long

Tag-a-long

This attaches to the rear of an adult bike and allows a safe way to get children used to cycling.  They are good for children who are not quite ready for their own bike, or who may have sight issues but who still enjoy going fast! They can be useful during longer bike rides where younger ones may tire easily.

Standard trike

Standard trike

These trikes are great for extra balance as they are very sturdy, but they also offer independence as no parental assistance is required.

Specially adapted trike

Specially adapted trike

These trikes can come with many different adaptations to suit specific needs, extra head, neck or torso support, or footplates, or a parent handle to help with steering.  An assessment will be carried out by a specialist supplier and each trike is built accordingly.

Hand trike

Hand trike

This is a hand-propelled trike designed for children with limited or no use of their legs. They are easy to use and offer extra security. An assessment will be carried out by a specialist supplier and each hand trike is built accordingly.
